Great News! Our standard Arbeitspferd Feder is approved for the Longpoint Tournament! Most customizations have also been approved for the tournament as long as they do not reduce the flex in the blade or create sharp/course edges on the guard, pommel, schilt or edge of the Feder!
A feder is a sport and competition training sword used for practice in HEMA Longsword fighting (or SCA cut and thrust). There are many options, all of which are in the photographs above. The German guard is based on a 15th century executioner sword guard. It has dual fullers running the length of the blade, an Ipe (pronounced “ee-pay) wood core handle with stitched on leather or a cord wrap.
The Arbeitspferd is designed to be strong and durable and able to withstand the demands of tournament use or training. The blade is made of Shock Seven Steel, a 125 foot pound carbon steel heat treated to 57 rc. The blade is ¼ inches (.635 cm) thick and narrows to 3 mm (.118 inches) on the last third to provide extra flex. The guard is also Shock Seven Steel heat treated to 57 rc. This increases the safety of the feder as the blade and guard will be able to take a lot of abuse. The pommel nut is very stable once tightened down, and is able to maintain a solid lock through hundreds of strikes.
The handle is made of Ipe (pronounced “ee-pay”) from FSC approved sources. Ipe is a Brazilian hardwood with a Jenka Harness rating of 3,510 lbf (15,620 N); it has the same burn rating as concrete. The handle is wrapped and covered with stitched-on veg tanned leather, or braided cord wrap – your choice!
Custom options are shown in the pictures above and include the handle shape, handle color (leather or cord – cord colors can also be wrapped in 2 colors), schilt shape, pommel type, and guard type.
